Paper Wheels

Phish’s seasoned leader blisses out on this 2015 solo album. “Flying Machines” is a vibrant jam-band workout that nods to The Grateful Dead in both its intricacy and willingness to stretch. Elsewhere, Anastasio reveals a love for a wide range of ’70s pop and rock. With its crisp instrumentation and pristine harmonies, “The Song” evokes Steely Dan, while “Sometime After Sunset” is awash in the easy feelings of West Coast country rock and “Liquid Time” sits well with the wiry guitar sound of early Dire Straits.
