From his days as a reggaetón forefather through his righteous rebirth as a global music superstar, Nicky Jam earned his contemporary status as Latin music royalty. Thankfully, he refuses to rest on his laurels or threaten his fans with retirement, steadily putting out new music both with and without a multigenerational mix of collaborators. For the EP-length Sunshine, he presses forward with his sleek style, favouring ultramodern instrumentals over any lingering nostalgic urges. Less preoccupied with pulsating perreo, he comes through with a poppier version of his preferred genre, XYZing on “Dile a ÉL” and combining flirtations with flexes on “Totiiii”. But he hasn’t turned his back on the club, getting raunchy over the stuttering beat of his Timbaland-infused “Mine” and teaming up with Geo for the dance-floor-focused “Roxxxstar”.
